The move comes as Kansas City navigates a timeline shadowed by Patrick Mahomes’ knee injury. Mahomes tore his ACL and LCL in his left knee last season and is working back as the Chiefs prepare for the season. Fields arrives with a front-row seat to observe one of the league’s premier quarterback-coach duos and a path to development within a stable system.
Fields, now on his fourth team in as many seasons, said he joined Kansas City to soak up the culture and learn from Mahomes and coach Reid. “I wanted to come here because of the culture, because of Pat and to learn from him and coach Reid,” he described, adding that he’s excited to observe Mahomes in meetings and on the field and to contribute as part of the offense.
Fields’ stint with the Jets did not yield the breakout results he and the team hoped for. In nine starts, he completed 62.7 percent of his 204 pass attempts for 1,259 yards, with seven touchdowns and one interception.
Before the trade, Fields and Mahomes knew of each other but did not talk much; that dynamic has evolved since the arrival in Kansas City. He’ll likely begin the year as the coexisting backup behind Mahomes, with the offseason reps giving him a chance to learn the Chiefs’ system and coaching staff, including offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy.
If Mahomes needs more recovery time or an early-season absence occurs, Fields could see action sooner than expected. For now, the arrangement provides him with a real opportunity to develop behind one of the game’s elite players while embracing the Chiefs’ winning culture.
