Grier had been Dallas’s depth option behind Dak Prescott, but the Cowboys released him in March after signing Sam Howell to compete for the backup spot.
The move follows a 2023 season in which Dallas traded for Trey Lance and subsequently cut Grier, a decision that drew support from Prescott, who spoke highly of Grier’s work and character.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Grier is joining Carolina and will enter a quarterback room that includes Bryce Young and Kenny Pickett.
Grier, a West Virginia product, was once projected as a potential first-round pick in college but fell to No. 100 in the 2019 draft, when the Panthers selected him.
Dallas is pursuing an open competition for the backup role behind Prescott, with Sam Howell and Joe Milton in the mix, per head coach Brian Schottenheimer. As the draft approaches, teams continue to refine their quarterback plans.
