Dalton’s stint with the Eagles began with a trade from Carolina in the offseason, in a push to add veteran depth behind starter Jalen Hurts. Through the spring and summer, Dalton appeared to earn more QB2 reps than Tanner McKee and started in the preseason when Hurts sat out. He remained Hurts’ primary backup for the early weeks of the regular season, seeing action in Week 3 against the Chicago Bears, where he threw a red-zone interception before being moved down the depth chart. A short time later, he was released as the Eagles continued to adjust behind Hurts.
Since Dalton’s departure, the Eagles have faced several injury-related developments. Hurts experienced calf-related concerns that were later described as a superficial blood clot, leading to a stint on injured reserve. The team promoted Cole Payton to QB2 for a Week 6 matchup and added Joe Milton from the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad to bolster the depth behind Hurts.
Dalton will step in as the replacement for the recently released Cooper Rush in Atlanta.
