Jauan Jennings, a veteran receiver from the Minnesota Vikings, has drawn trade interest. Despite Pittsburgh’s injuries, however, some view the Steelers as a difficult destination for Jennings ahead of the November 10 trade deadline.
Steelers deemed a poor fit for Jauan Jennings
A prominent football analyst listed Pittsburgh as Jennings’ worst potential landing spot in a piece evaluating receivers who could be moved before the deadline. The concern isn’t whether Jennings could succeed in Mike McCarthy’s West Coast offense, but whether he could quickly make an impact after arriving midseason, especially with Rodgers already working to build trust with Pittsburgh’s available pass catchers.
Jennings would need time to develop a rapport with Rodgers, potentially limiting his immediate role. There’s a risk he could become an afterthought in the offense again. A suggested more favorable destination was the Las Vegas Raiders, cited for their need at the position and Klint Kubiak’s familiarity with Jennings’ previous offenses in San Francisco.
This assessment comes as the Steelers, who could use experienced help right away, grapple with limited options at receiver. Jennings signed a one-year, $8 million contract with Minnesota in May, with potential value up to $13 million with incentives. Behind stars Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, he has recorded just two receptions for nine yards on five targets in four games. Those figures contrast sharply with his production in prior seasons, including 2024 with 77 receptions for 975 yards and six touchdowns, and the previous year with 55 catches for 643 yards and nine touchdowns. Jennings has 22 career receiving touchdowns.
Injuries complicate the Jennings discussion
Pittsburgh already knows the toll of a veteran receiver not immediately making a major impact. Pittman joined the Steelers this offseason from the Indianapolis Colts but had only seven catches for 89 yards in three games before a foot injury put him on injured reserve. Wilson’s finger injury and Skowronek’s calf issue have further thinned the group. The second-round rookie Germie Bernard has provided optimism, catching six passes for 80 yards in the Steelers’ 34-22 win over the Colts. Coach Mike McCarthy highlighted Bernard’s versatility, noting he can play all three receiver spots and contribute as a blocker.
Trust between quarterback and receivers is crucial. Metcalf stressed the importance of young receivers understanding their assignments and earning Rodgers’ trust, a sentiment echoed by observers who emphasize route knowledge and consistency as keys to earning Rodgers’ confidence.
The Steelers also have Brandon Smith, Isaiah Hodgins, and Brandon Johnson on the practice squad as potential reinforcements, offering options without diverting draft capital to Minnesota. While Jennings would bring proven depth, a trade would require an adjustment period with Rodgers, and there have been no reports of negotiations between the Steelers and Vikings. Pittsburgh’s need for healthy receivers now makes the consideration of Jennings particularly consequential.
