Waddle’s diminished stat line is part of a larger narrative surrounding his early tenure with Denver. After six games with the Broncos, he averaging 3.7 catches and 38 receiving yards per game, figures that would mark career lows. His catch rate, yards per target, and yards after catch per reception are also trending toward personal career lows, prompting discussions about his fit and usage in the Broncos’ offense.
Some observers have linked Waddle’s early struggles to the quarterback play, with questions centered on how the offensive system is generating—or failing to generate—explosive plays. Denver’s offense has struggled to produce high-tempo, big-play opportunities, a contrast to what fans might have expected from a trade that brought in a high-profile pass catcher. The team has also undergone changes on the coaching staff, including a transition at offensive coordinator and play-caller roles, before head coach Sean Payton reassumed play-calling duties.
The quarterback situation has been a focal point of discussion, with remarks from the signal-caller suggesting that the offense needs to find more explosive plays. The Broncos have emphasized the importance of breaking tendencies to create big plays and spark more dynamic attacking options.
From a financial perspective, Denver committed substantial long-term resources to Waddle, adding a three-year, $84.7 million extension. The contract includes significant guarantees and sizable cap hits in the coming years, underscoring the expectation that Waddle would be a cornerstone of the offense.
Looking ahead, the Broncos aim to maximize Waddle’s involvement as a path to generating more explosive plays and improving overall offensive efficiency in 2026. Up next, Denver travels to face the Arizona Cardinals. The team has posted a positive record against the NFC West this season, with wins over teams such as the Los Angeles Rams, while suffering a tougher result against San Francisco.
