The injury occurred on a play in which Thornton caught a 55-yard pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes, ending what had been a productive start to the 2026 NFL season. Although Thornton remains sidelined, his latest post signals that he is focused on rehabilitation. His absence has raised questions about how Kansas City will replace one of its most productive offensive players. Thornton had established himself as the club’s primary deep threat, helping to stretch defenses and create opportunities for Mahomes and the rest of the Chiefs’ offense. The ankle dislocation required surgery, and he was subsequently placed on injured reserve.
In addition to Thornton’s status, the Chiefs are dealing with a hamstring injury to wide receiver Rashee Rice, who sustained the issue in the same game. Rice missed the team’s first practice ahead of the Chargers matchup, leaving his availability uncertain. With Thornton ruled out, Kansas City could enter the divisional game without its two most productive wide receivers through the first four games.
Head coach Andy Reid addressed the situation at a recent press conference, expressing confidence in the team’s receiving depth and the players who will rotate in. “They do get a lot of reps in practice, and we normally rotate guys in there anyways,” Reid said. “I mean, guys need a blow (to catch their breath), so the guys go in and have a chance to play. But we’ve got a good stable of guys at that spot and feel comfortable with, Pat (Mahomes) feels comfortable with, and so we try to use them when needed.”
Reid named Xavier Worthy as an option to help replace Thornton’s production. Worthy, a former first-round pick, has already shown explosiveness, including a 41-yard catch in a Week 4 win over the Raiders and a touchdown against the Indianapolis Colts earlier in the season. Worthy’s speed could help assume a larger portion of the vertical receiving duties Thornton handled prior to his injury.
Mahomes expressed confidence in the younger receivers as they prepare for greater responsibilities. He noted that the rookies and younger players have been putting in the work, both in practice and in extended reps, and that their number will be called when needed. Mahomes also highlighted that extra practice time with the first-team offense should help the receivers prepare for increased roles.
Kansas City is set to face the Chargers at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday.
