Delane’s night started on a high note. On the Chiefs’ opening defensive series, he read a deep third-down throw from Bo Nix intended for Courtland Sutton, intercepted the pass, and returned it to the Denver 46-yard line. The play came on just his third NFL snap. Patrick Mahomes converted the turnover into a 15-yard rushing touchdown, giving Kansas City a 7-0 lead.
Not long after the interception, Delane walked to the locker room, with Kristian Fulton entering in his place. The Chiefs later listed him as questionable to return with a shoulder injury, a designation corroborated by reporters. Linebacker Cooper McDonald also headed to the tunnel around the same stretch with a knee issue.
About 80 minutes after the initial questionable designation, the team downgraded both Delane and McDonald to out for the game at the start of the second half. A widely followed NFL insider confirmed that Delane had been ruled out for the night.
Delane, the No. 6 overall pick out of LSU, first dealt with shoulder trouble toward the end of organized team activities this spring, an ailment that sidelined him from mandatory minicamp in June. General manager Brett Veach later discussed the injury, noting that Delane’s shoulder blade issue was not expected to be long-term, but it needed time to fully heal. Delane spent much of camp in a yellow non-contact jersey before returning to practice. He described his recovery as progressing well, noting that the original issue stemmed from pushing too hard during offseason workouts. He was cleared for contact before the preseason, though some reports listed him as limited entering August.
No official update has clarified whether Monday’s injury is a new occurrence or a progression of the spring issue, and there has been no disclosed severity grade or timetable for Delane’s return. Team officials are expected to address the rookie’s status in the days following the game.
