Story’s own rehab progress has been unclear. In his most recent outing with the Triple-A affiliate, he went hitless in four at-bats and recorded three strikeouts. He has said publicly that he believes he’s making progress, and that timing at the plate remains the primary hurdle to a return. “Overall, feeling really good… I’m on time with the barrel, just a touch off on squaring pitches. It’s to be expected,” Story explained. “More than the results, it’s about how I’m feeling and dictating the at-bat. Next day or two, hit some barrels and feel good about returning.”
Through this rehab period, Story has struggled at the plate, posting a 4-for-29 line with 10 strikeouts and just one walk, and he still hasn’t registered an extra-base hit. The lack of production has fans understandably worried that he might not quickly return to form. The timeline remains uncertain as he works to regain his timing and confidence.
Story last played for the Red Sox on May 14, when he required sports hernia surgery. At that time, he batted .206 with a .244 on-base percentage, a .303 slugging percentage, and a .547 OPS.
The Red Sox have achieved strong results this season even without a steady shortstop option. In Story’s absence, others have stepped up. Andruw Monasterio has filled the role more consistently of late, while middle infielders Nick Sogard and Anthony Seigler have also contributed, with Sogard providing versatility and Seigler offering depth at various infield spots. Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who has dealt with injuries, had been in the mix before his latest setback, and Marcelo Mayer’s status has included an injury and a trade to another organization earlier in the season.
Story himself has acknowledged the depth providing a cushion for the team: “Those guys have played really well, and did their job at a really high level. It’s given us a little bit of a cushion to, if I don’t feel 100 percent sharp, it’s okay to take a couple extra and really make sure that the body feels good. I owe it to the team and to myself to come back and be the best version of myself.”
There is little appetite within the organization to rush a call-up that would displace key contributors who have helped stabilize the club. However, the looming decision could force a roster move if the team wants to activate Story before rosters expand.
One option is to wait until September 1 for roster expansion, but that would prevent Story from participating in a critical series against the rival Yankees, potentially impacting timing and momentum. Interim manager Chad Tracy has stressed the need to balance timing, health, and on-field impact when considering whether to activate Story and who might be moved to accommodate him.
As Story’s rehab continues, the front office and coaching staff will be watching closely for signs of improved timing and consistency at the plate. The team is intent on returning him to full health and peak performance, rather than rushing him back before he’s ready. The decision will likely hinge on a combination of his on-field readiness, the current needs of the roster, and the broader strategic considerations of maintaining momentum in the Wild Card race.
