Texans’ C.J. Stroud is once again set up for failure, experts say.

The Houston Texans have spent much of the offseason positioning C.J. Stroud as a central question mark for the franchise. While some of the criticism is warranted—Stroud hasn’t consistently flashed the elite rookie season form—the bigger issue may be the environment the team is building around him as 2026 approaches.

In a recent outing, Stroud looked sharp in limited action, completing 4 of 6 passes and guiding Houston on a 69-yard touchdown drive during his sole series. The more telling story, however, was the status of the offensive line in front of him.

The Texans are still sorting out their starting five on the line. Reports from training camp highlighted the absence of a familiar anchor, with Wyatt Teller not present in the opening first-unit lineup and rookie Keylan Rutledge taking Teller’s left guard spot. Teller was signed to a two-year, $16 million deal this offseason with the goal of stabilizing a line that has complicated Stroud’s development. During a later drill with the second unit, Teller surrendered a sack, underscoring the ongoing uncertainty along the front five as the regular season nears.

This isn’t a routine preseason shuffle; it reflects Houston’s ongoing effort to identify the best combination up front before Week 1. The line’s continuity and performance will have a direct impact on Stroud’s ability to play efficiently and make the requisite decisions under pressure.

The challenges for Stroud aren’t limited to the line. The Texans also saw a loss in receivers with Jayden Higgins going down with a season-ending ACL injury, removing a potential second-year weapon alongside Nico Collins. While this setback does not excuse Stroud’s own mistakes—interceptions, stalled drives, and inconsistency still require better production from the quarterback—it does highlight the broader context in which he must operate.

In short, Stroud must elevate his play in 2026. There’s little doubt about that. But the Texans need to minimize the obstacles around him, ensuring the environment supports his development rather than overwhelming it with constant changes.

As the team moves toward the season, the focus remains on stabilizing the offensive line, building chemistry with the receiving corps, and reducing the volume of disruptive variables that can hinder a young quarterback’s progression. With the right adjustments, Stroud has the opportunity to reclaim and sustain the form that made him an early-season standout as a rookie.
