Sears’ recent note-worthy performance came in his latest Triple-A start on August 18, when he hurled five no-hit innings against the Iowa Cubs, totaling seven strikeouts. His development has included time with the West Michigan Whitecaps and the Erie SeaWolves. A Rhode Island native, Sears began his college career at Rhode Island College before transferring to Connecticut. After being selected by Detroit in the 2023 MLB Draft, Sears emerged as a notable prospect within the organization.
In 2024, Sears flourished with Low-A Lakeland, posting a 2.51 ERA and 101 strikeouts over 89.2 innings. He started 2025 with High-A West Michigan, and after some early struggles he adjusted well, yielding only seven earned runs across more than 40 innings in his subsequent appearances.
The Tigers have struggled recently, dropping six of their last seven games. As of late August, Detroit sits in fourth place in the American League Central with a 61-67 record, six games behind the division-leading Chicago White Sox and 2.5 games back of the final AL Wild Card spot.
