The rink held a special significance for Chara, as he once skated there as a child. After the game, he unlaced his skates on the ice and walked off hand in hand with his two sons, adding an emotional moment to the ceremony. Chara reflected on the experience, saying, “I was skating here as a young boy and now they are those young boys. Time has passed so quickly. I will never forget this moment and I believe they will have some nice memories as well.”
Among the attendees were notable Bruins alumni including David Pastrnak, Patrice Bergeron, Tim Thomas, and Mark Recchi. Also present were several prominent Slovakian former NHL players, such as Marian Hossa, Peter Bondra, Miroslav Satan, Marian Gaborik, Jozef Stumpel, Michal Handzus, and Jaroslav Halak.
Bergeron, who captained Boston to the 2011 Stanley Cup, highlighted Chara’s dedication to fitness and detail. He recalled meeting Chara in the gym and being impressed by his intensity and work ethic. Bergeron noted that Chara’s influence helped shape the team’s culture during his 14 seasons alongside him, transforming the locker room dynamic and leaving a lasting impact on his career and development.
Chara’s legacy with the Bruins is enduring. He became the 13th player in franchise history to have his number retired, a ceremony that took place in January of the following year. Chara captained the Bruins to the 2011 Stanley Cup and later helped the team reach the Stanley Cup Final in 2013 and again in 2019. In 2025, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, cementing his status as one of the sport’s all-time greats.
