Stephen Curry and his wife, Ayesha Curry, founded Eat. Learn. Play. in 2019. The organization focuses on childhood nutrition, literacy, and access to physical activity, particularly in Oakland. According to the foundation, Eat. Learn. Play. has provided 35 million nutritious meals to children and families experiencing food insecurity. Its work has also included literacy tutoring, supplying books, and renovating schoolyards, libraries, cafeterias, and gyms.
Curry accepted the award after being credited by Lonnie Ali, president and CEO of the Muhammad Ali Center, for his Oakland impact. Curry noted that Oakland has supported him generously since his arrival in the Bay Area in 2009, saying that the city has given him love, support, and energy.
The award followed recent expansions of the Currys’ charitable efforts. A May auction featuring Stephen Curry, Ayesha Curry, and Warren Buffett raised $9,000,100, with proceeds split between Eat. Learn. Play. and the GLIDE organization in San Francisco. Buffett also pledged to match the bid. Curry has also launched a scholarship program intended to send five to ten Bay Area students to Davidson College each year.
Amid the humanitarian recognition, Golden State remained involved in one of the NBA offseason’s biggest stories. Reports indicated that players have pitched James on joining the Warriors, though team sources remained cautiously optimistic about the possibility. There has been speculation about pursuing a broader plan that could involve other veteran stars, aiming to surround Curry with additional elite playmakers for the latter stages of his career.
