Vanterpool has been part of the Wizards since 2023, serving as the lead assistant under head coach Brian Keefe for the past two-and-a-half seasons. At 53 years old, Vanterpool has a long coaching résumé that includes roles with Portland, Minnesota, and Brooklyn, as well as international playing and coaching experience. Earlier in his career, he held a position with the Oklahoma City Thunder as director of player personnel from 2010 to 2012, and he has been viewed in the past as a potential candidate for a future general manager role before his focus shifted back to coaching.
Caporn, who will assume the role of top assistant, brings an international coaching background to the Wizards. The 44-year-old Australian is already part of the Wizards’ coaching staff and had been an assistant on Brian Keefe’s staff. Caporn also serves as the head coach of Australia’s men’s national team, the Boomers. His NBA journey began with the Long Island Nets as head coach in the 2021-22 season, followed by two seasons as an assistant with Brooklyn. He joined Washington as an assistant in 2024.
In other staffing news, Patrick Ewing is joining Washington’s coaching staff as an assistant, and Steve Clifford will take on a coaching advisor role, further rounding out the team’s leadership structure. These moves come as the Wizards look to optimize their on-court strategy and development programs ahead of the upcoming season.
