Madrid is weighing a pre-season evaluation by coach Jose Mourinho before finalizing any decision. However, plans have long been to continue Mastantuono’s development elsewhere rather than at Real Madrid.
A permanent departure has not been on the table. Real Madrid invested €63.2 million to sign Mastantuono last year and has no intention of losing control over one of its most valuable prospects. The Argentine remains under contract until 2031, and any move this summer would be a straightforward loan, with no purchase options to weaken Madrid’s grip on the player’s future.
Europe remains the priority
Once it became clear that Real Madrid were open to sending Mastantuono on loan, interest quickly emerged from multiple clubs across Europe and South America. The interest was reported by several sources tracking European football movements.
Inter Milan, Sporting CP, Tottenham Hotspur, Benfica, and Stade Rennais have all explored the possibility of signing the youngster. Meanwhile, Mastantuono’s former club River Plate has also shown strong interest in reuniting with the talent.
Real Madrid’s priorities are clear: they want Mastantuono to remain in Europe and preferably join a side competing in the Champions League. With those conditions in mind, several candidates have fallen behind in the race.
Villarreal in pole position
According to recent reporting, Villarreal currently leads the chase for the Argentine attacking midfielder. The Yellow Submarine meet Real Madrid’s criteria by offering Champions League football and a competitive environment where Mastantuono could receive regular minutes.
Additionally, the proposed loan would see Real Madrid cover about half of the player’s wages, making the arrangement financially feasible for the Spanish club.
At present, no final decision has been made, and Mourinho’s assessment during pre-season could still influence the outcome. Present indications, however, suggest Villarreal is the strongest contender to secure Mastantuono’s services on loan.
If a deal goes through, Mastantuono could remain in La Liga next season, continuing his development while wearing the Villarreal jersey and showcasing one of South America’s brightest talents in European competition.
