Bain was involved in a fatal crash in 2024 on Interstate 95 in Miami around 4 a.m., where a passenger, Destiny Betts, later died from injuries. He was cited for careless driving, but the charges were dropped before Betts’ death, and there were no reported sobriety tests at the scene.
In comments to reporters, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said the team was aware of Bain’s past at the start of the season and stressed their vetting process. “This is the most important part of our job, getting the player right. It’s the whole body of work on the field, off the field,” Veach noted, adding that Bain was evaluated extensively through meetings and drills.
The organization reportedly spent considerable time with Bain at the combine and during a club visit, reinforcing that the decision would be based on a thorough, consistent evaluation of every player on the draft board.
As the draft approaches in late April, Bain remains a polarizing yet highly regarded prospect among edge players. The Chiefs’ ongoing vetting underscores their broader strategy of balancing talent and character to bolster the pass rush while aligning with the franchise’s long-term culture.
