Boston is viewed as a fit for Kyle Shanahan’s offense, known for winning on contested catches, back-shoulder fades, and routes across the middle. He would provide additional flexibility for quarterback Brock Purdy and could serve as Evans’ understudy if the team signs the veteran wideout.
The 49ers have reshaped their WR corps this offseason, moving on from several veterans. Brandon Aiyuk appears ready to move on, Kendrick Bourne has joined the Cardinals, and Jauan Jennings is not expected back. The front office also added veteran targets in free agency with Mike Evans and Christian Kirk.
Boston brings a track record of production, including back-to-back seasons with 60 receptions and 800-plus receiving yards, along with 20 combined touchdowns over the last two years. He was one of two Big Ten wide receivers last season to post 60+ catches, 800+ yards, and at least 11 touchdowns.
In addition to Evans and Kirk, the 49ers still feature Demarcus Robinson and Ricky Pearsall, as well as playmakers like Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle. If Boston joins the fold, the offense would have a deeper and more versatile weapons group to support the quarterback and the run game.
With only six total picks this year, San Francisco must maximize value at every selection. Drafting Boston at No. 27 would help round out a targeted, high-upside WR corps as the team aims to rebound after a busy offseason.
All eyes will be on No. 27 as the 49ers finalize their plan to bolster the receiver room ahead of the season.
