Before their playoff journey even began, Darnold appeared on the Seahawks’ injury report with an oblique strain ahead of the divisional-round game against the San Francisco 49ers. He would play through the playoffs with that issue, and after beating the Patriots, he described the weeks as “not fun by any means” and noted that it hurt “really bad.”
Darnold finished 19 of 38 for 202 yards, threw one touchdown, and had no interceptions. He connected on a 16-yard scoring pass to A.J. Barner in the fourth quarter, delivering Seattle’s margin of victory as the defense carried the day.
Seattle’s defense was the story for much of the game, limiting the Patriots to 79 rushing yards and keeping New England scoreless through the first three quarters. The performance helped neutralize the Patriots’ offense even as Maye posted solid numbers in a losing effort.
Patriots quarterback Drake Maye went 27 of 43 for 295 yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions, plus five carries for 37 yards, six sacks, and a lost fumble. The Seahawks’ front is what consistently disrupted New England’s drives, setting the tone early.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba spoke to NFL Network after the win, praising Seattle’s defense: “They’ve been ready. It’s always fun to watch them. We know they’ve got our back. … Defense wins championships, and we got one today.” His comments underscored the unit’s pivotal role in the championship run.
Patriots coach Mike Vrabel attributed the loss to Pittsburgh-style turnover damage and rhythm issues, saying New England couldn’t gain offensive or field-position rhythm and that the turnovers ultimately cost them the game.
