Haslett began his NFL coaching career with the Cowboys under McCarthy, working in Dallas from 2020-22 and remaining on the staff through McCarthy’s entire Cowboys tenure through 2024. In 2025, Haslett served as the Saints’ tight ends coach, continuing to build experience in McCarthy’s extended coaching network.
The 33-year-old coach is also the son of Jim Haslett, a former Steelers defensive coordinator and Saints head coach. Jim Haslett’s NFL coaching résumé spans 1993-2008, 2010-14, and 2016-21, including a stint as Steelers DC from 1997-1999 and as Saints head coach from 2000-05.
Ironically, McCarthy worked as the Saints’ offensive coordinator from 2000-04 while Jim Haslett led the Saints, adding another layer to the McCarthy-Haslett connection that appears to influence Steelers’ interviews this offseason.
Sunday’s report, via Schultz on X, notes that the Steelers have engaged Haslett for the passing game coordinator/TEs coach role, marking another instance where Steelers’ coaching staff-building is influenced by McCarthy’s legacy and shared personnel.
This development adds to a broader pattern of the Steelers pursuing candidates with direct ties to the organization or to McCarthy, as they reshape their offensive staff in the offseason. The Haslett interview is still in the exploratory phase, with no final hiring decision announced at this time.
