Nix sustained the broken ankle against the Buffalo Bills, a loss the team is still processing. A recent performance in the AFC Championship Game against the New England Patriots underscored how difficult that snowy, defensive battle was and suggested there was little more Nix could have done under those conditions.
In interviews following the loss, Nix told reporters that Payton shouldn’t have disclosed how many surgeries he’s undergone, saying, “Sean (Payton) shouldn’t have said how many surgeries I’ve had because he doesn’t know.” The comment highlights a friction point between the quarterback and the coach.
Payton, speaking to the media on Tuesday, referenced medical findings that shaped the timeline and recovery plan. He said, “What was found was a condition that was predisposed – they always find a little more when they go in. It wasn’t a matter of if, it was a matter of when. When you look at the play and you’re trying to evaluate it – the operating surgeon said that this was going to happen sooner than later. Now, you go about the rehab, proper orthotics, all those things.”
The Broncos’ leadership stressed that the quarterback-coach relationship must remain cohesive for sustained success, noting that the team is talented enough that internal tensions cannot persist. Maintaining a united front will be crucial as they transition from season-ending injuries toward the offseason program.
Regarding his recovery, Nix indicated he expects to be healthy in about 4-6 weeks and ready to begin offseason training, aligning with a plan to resume football activities once his ankle is cleared for work.
