Bill Polian, the former Bills and Colts GM, addressed circulating rumors on SiriusXM NFL Radio, stating he voted for Belichick and that the Hall of Fame’s auditors confirmed his vote.
Polian also asserted in a written statement that he never said Belichick should “wait a year” for enshrinement, and he reaffirmed his belief that Belichick is a first-ballot Hall of Famer.
Induction requires at least 40 votes from 50 selectors, and Belichick’s shortfall leaves room for speculation about politics in the voting process.
Belichick’s résumé remains among the most accomplished in NFL history: 17 AFC East titles in 23 seasons, a record 11 straight division crowns (2009–2019), six Super Bowl titles as Patriots head coach, and two Super Bowls as the Giants’ defensive coordinator in the 1986 and 1990 seasons.
Spygate, the 2007 incident in which the Patriots were found to have taped opponents’ practices to steal signals, continues to be cited as the notable blemish on Belichick’s otherwise storied career.
Next year’s Hall of Fame class will again be the focal point for Belichick’s candidacy, and Polian’s public refutation of the rumor helps clarify the record amid ongoing discussion about the voting process.
