McCarthy suffered an ankle injury when someone stepped on his foot in the first half, sending him to the sideline medical tent for treatment at halftime of the NFL game.
The Steelers trailed 13-3 at the break but rallied to a 26-19 overtime win. Aaron Rodgers connected with rookie wide receiver Germie Bernard for the winning touchdown.
Despite McCarthy’s halftime absence, Pittsburgh’s coaching staff managed the adjustments effectively. McCarthy credited his assistants and players for keeping the process organized.
“They didn’t miss a beat,” McCarthy said. “Adjustments were made, and halftime’s quick, anyway.”
He noted that maintaining clear communication was the priority while he received treatment.
“Frankly, the biggest part was really just getting the offensive conversations to me when the guys came out,” McCarthy added. “I thought the guys did what they needed to do.”
Steelers’ comeback win highlights adaptability
The moment underscored the importance of having a coaching structure that can function under unexpected circumstances. NFL teams have limited time to adjust at halftime, making clear communication essential.
The Steelers faced a challenging start offensively in the opening half but showed resilience and delivered a strong second-half performance that provided a positive takeaways for the coaching staff.
Rodgers emphasized the significance of high-pressure moments for team growth, describing the victory as a trajectory win. His connection with Bernard produced the decisive score, with the rookie serving as a key target during the comeback.
McCarthy’s injury was unusual because head coaches rarely require medical treatment on the sideline. Nonetheless, the incident did not deter Pittsburgh from completing its comeback.
Looking ahead, the Steelers’ next test is an international matchup against the New Orleans Saints in France. McCarthy will hope his ankle improves ahead of the trip.
