Patrick Mahomes breaks silence after red-zone interception
The Chiefs’ defense stifled the Chargers, limiting them to 259 total yards and keeping them out of the end zone. On offense, Kenneth Walker III carried the rushing workload, recording 128 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries.
The focal point of the game was a rare lapse by Mahomes in the red zone. With the Chiefs on the Chargers’ 2-yard line facing a third-and-goal, Mahomes attempted a pass to Andrew Armstrong, who had been elevated from the practice squad. Chargers cornerback Cam Hart intercepted the ball in the back of the end zone. Replays showed Travis Kelce open near the sideline, but Mahomes didn’t spot him in time. The Chargers failed to convert on their ensuing drive.
In his postgame remarks, Mahomes owned the error. “Yeah. Obviously, the ball, you can’t throw like that. The look wasn’t what we wanted, but there we had an option, and it was (Andrew) Armstrong, and it happened faster than I expected it. So instead of just kind of staying with it and throwing it in the end, I kind of started scrambling, and then I did, like, what you’re not supposed to do,” he said. He added, “I kind of was trying to throw it away but at the same time, like, trying to give him a chance, and then getting hit left it short. And so you just can’t do that.”
Kelce briefly left the field after a tackle by Chargers linebacker Daiyan Henley, but he returned after his ankle was wrapped. Chiefs coach Andy Reid provided a positive update: Kelce tweaked his ankle but continued to play, and may be a little sore the next day.
Statistically, Kelce finished with four receptions for 53 yards. Mahomes completed 23 of 30 passes for 272 yards, with one interception and no passing touchdowns, finishing with an 89.9 quarterback rating. He also contributed five rushing attempts for 16 yards.
Through five games this season, Mahomes has logged three interceptions and 1,309 passing yards with nine touchdowns. The lone red-zone pick adds to a recent trend of costly turnovers, though it did not derail a victory in this matchup.
