The Denver Broncos franchise is honoring the memory of a storied front-office figure, former general manager John Beake, who died at age 87. Beake’s tenure with the team spanned from 1979 to 2000, including 14 seasons as general manager from 1985 to 1998. Under his leadership, Denver reached five Super Bowls and captured back-to-back championships in the 1997 and 1998 seasons.
Beake joined the Broncos in 1979 as director of pro personnel and later became director of player personnel in 1981. In that role, he played a key part in orchestrating the 1983 trade that brought quarterback John Elway to Denver. Elway would later be inducted into the Hall of Fame and lead the Broncos to their two late-1990s titles. The team’s first championship came in Super Bowl XXXII after a 12-4 regular season, followed by a second title in Super Bowl XXXIII after a 14-2 campaign. During Beake’s time with the Broncos, the organization won seven division titles and made 12 playoff appearances.
In 1999, Beake advanced to vice president of administration, serving through the 2000 season. He departed Denver late in 2000 to lead football operations for NFL Europe and retired from the league in 2004 after approximately 35 years in professional football. He later served on the Broncos Ring of Fame selection committee.
Beake is survived by his wife, Marcia, and two sons, Chip and Chris. His daughter Jerilyn passed away in 2017.
Beake’s impact on the Broncos and the broader NFL is remembered for shaping a front office that guided the franchise to multiple championships and sustained success during the 1980s and 1990s. His collaborations off the field helped assemble one of the most celebrated eras in team history, including the pivotal acquisition of a quarterback who became emblematic of the franchise’s late-90s triumphs.
