Miami’s 31-24 Week 5 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals may have looked better on the surface due to the final score, but the performance also showed progress. The running game had its strongest showing of the season, with Ollie Gordon leading the way. Additionally, the Dolphins scored more than one touchdown in a game for the first time this season.
In the aftermath of the Week 5 game, the NFL announced several punishments for players for actions during the matchup against Cincinnati. One notable incident occurred in the first quarter when Cincinnati safety Jordan Battle tackled Miami wide receiver Malik Washington after an 18-yard gain. While there was no on-field penalty, Battle was fined for unnecessary roughness due to illegal use of the helmet. The drive continued and ended in a Dolphins touchdown. Cincinnati tight end Erick All was also fined for unnecessary roughness during the kickoff after Miami’s touchdown. Unlike Battle, All’s penalty was called during the game.
Both Battle and All have the option to appeal the fines. If they appeal, their cases would be reviewed by appeals officers and former NFL players who are jointly appointed and paid by the NFL and NFLPA. The decisions reached in these appeals are final and binding.
The Dolphins have a bye week coming up. While the team’s first five weeks have been challenging for fans, there are reasons for optimism, particularly from the rookie class. Reports highlight Kadyn Proctor’s strong start at left guard, with limited penalties and sacks through substantial playing time. Another standout has been linebacker Jacob Rodriguez, who leads the league in tackles through Week Five and has added multiple notable contributions, underscoring first-round potential for Defensive Rookie of the Year consideration. Additionally, Chris Johnson has shown improvement since Week Three, particularly in man coverage, where his metrics place him among the better-performing players in the league.
As the Dolphins head into the bye, fans have reasons to stay hopeful about the trajectory of this young team.
