The New York Giants moved to jumpstart their struggling offense by inserting quarterback J.J. McCarthy for Jameis Winston in the second half of a game against the New Orleans Saints. The Giants trailed 34-10 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter when McCarthy came in from the bench. McCarthy immediately faced a difficult moment, throwing an interception on his first offensive series. Shortly after, reactions circulated on social media noting that the Saints defense had already forced three Giants turnovers on the preceding drives.
This marked McCarthy’s second straight game in which he played in a package that replaced Winston. The Giants added McCarthy in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings on September 28, a move that brought the quarterback to New York after an earlier season-ending injury to Jaxson Dart, the team’s presumed starter. The trade included a 2027 fifth-round pick, and the Vikings relieved themselves of McCarthy’s contract considerations while the Giants hoped to add another young signal-caller to their quarterback room.
