Two Chargers running backs have emerged as potential trade targets for the Patriots. In a recent discussion, NFL analyst Justin Leger suggested pursuing either Kimani Vidal or Keaton Mitchell from Los Angeles. Leger noted that the Chargers have used a three-way committee at running back, featuring Omarion Hampton, Vidal, and Mitchell. Hampton is viewed as a more expensive option for a trade, making Vidal or Mitchell the more realistic targets for New England.
Vidal is a young back in his third NFL season with the Chargers. This year, he has appeared in five games, recording one rushing touchdown, 14 rushing attempts, and 88 rushing yards. In the previous season, Vidal had three rushing touchdowns on 155 carries for 643 rushing yards across 13 games, highlighting his potential to contribute with more opportunities.
Mitchell is in his fourth NFL season and first with the Chargers. Through five games this season, he has 33 rushing attempts for 135 yards. Mitchell’s best pro season came in 2023 with the Baltimore Ravens, when he posted two rushing touchdowns and 396 rushing yards over eight games.
Acquiring either Vidal or Mitchell could provide the Patriots with a younger, productive option behind Henderson or potentially in place of him if the injury lingers. It remains to be seen whether the Patriots will pursue one of these players, but either could bolster the offense if Henderson’s absence is prolonged.
For now, Patriots fans will be watching Henderson’s status closely, and the team will evaluate its backfield depth as the season progresses.
