During Friday’s final practice ahead of the Jets game, a key defensive player faced an unclear status. Carlton Davis III missed practice again, casting doubt on his availability for Sunday’s matchup with the Jets. Davis has sat out every practice for two straight weeks, leaving the Patriots to craft a game plan around a thinner secondary.
The injury is neck-related. Davis sustained the issue in the Week 4 win at Buffalo on Oct. 4, played through the game, and then did not practice the following week, missing the Week 5 win over Las Vegas. This isn’t his first setback of the season; he was hurt in Week 1 against Seattle and missed the Week 2 home opener versus Pittsburgh after a week of limited practice. The team listed him as questionable on Friday before downgrading him to out on game day.
In 2026, Davis has recorded 13 solo tackles and three assists, with no sacks or forced fumbles. Last season he posted a 67.8 overall grade (34th among 114 qualified cornerbacks) and broke up 10 passes, ranking eighth at the position.
Practice participation remains the clearest indicator of whether a player will play on game day. Historical analyses of practice reports show that a player’s final session before a game is the strongest predictor of availability. Betting analysis aligns with this view, noting that players who skip practices are often not ready to go, with the doubtful tag spanning a wide range of likelihoods.
Davis has faced this situation before. He missed all practices prior to the Steelers game, was tagged questionable on Friday, and was ruled out the following day. Official designations are released later today, with inactives announced 90 minutes before kickoff.
New England has already managed without both starting corners in a recent game. With Davis and Christian Gonzalez (shoulder) sidelined in Week 5, the Patriots used man coverage on only nine drop-backs against Las Vegas, about 29%. If Gonzalez plays Sunday, he is likely to be assigned to guard Garrett Wilson, the Jets’ top receiver. Gonzalez has covered Wilson in three prior meetings, yielding eight catches for 72 yards and a touchdown across 51 routes.
If Davis is out again, the Patriots will lean on Marcus Jones, who has taken some outside snaps after primarily playing in the slot. Charles Woods and rookie Karon Prunty are also in the mix, though Prunty missed Friday’s practice with a hamstring injury. The practice squad option Kindle Vildor is also available. Jets quarterback Geno Smith ranks near the bottom of the league in drop-back expected points against Cover-1, and has shown patience with the ball, presenting an opportunity for the Patriots’ pass rush. Safety Kevin Byard III noted that better pressure could aid ball security and create more favorable opportunities for the defense.
If Gonzalez is cleared to play, he will likely shadow Garrett Wilson on Sunday. Gonzalez’s recent practice status remains a key variable in predicting the Patriots’ defensive effectiveness against the Jets.
