Defensive concerns linger for the Panthers after Week 1, when their unit faced a challenging outing against the Chicago Bears. The defense surrendered 59 points and more than 550 yards of offense. The performance drew attention online, with particular emphasis on areas needing improvement heading into another tough test. Still, Carolina believes the upcoming matchup offers a more favorable scenario, at least at the quarterback position for the Falcons.
Quarterback questions have dominated the Falcons’ week. In Week 1, injuries sidelined Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa, leading Cooper Rush to start. As Week 2 approaches, the Falcons are navigating injuries to all three of their quarterbacks, creating volatility around who will start on Sunday.
During midweek practice, Penix and Rush returned to full participation and shared first-team reps, while Tagovailoa did not practice due to an oblique issue. Penix indicated he is “close” to being able to play, but the situation remains fluid throughout the week. This kind of quarterback ambiguity typically complicates an opponent’s preparation, but Panthers coach Dave Canales suggested it isn’t a major concern for his team.
“The good part is, no singular quarterback that they have is a standout in terms of being a runner,” Canales said. “When you have pocket passers — and these are all quarterbacks I think are good — they can operate. As a former quarterbacks coach, I value what they can do. But there isn’t a dynamic of the zone-read element, a guy who creates that extra special threat. So we can really tailor the defense to the integrity of what Coach Stefanski is trying to run.”
Regardless of the Falcons’ starter, Carolina expects this week’s challenge to be more about execution than contending with an elite dual-threat quarterback. The Panthers anticipate a more straightforward defensive assignment than last week’s game, which featured one of the league’s top dual-threat talents. While defending the quarterback shouldn’t present a major hurdle, containing Falcons running back Bijan Robinson remains a significant task for Carolina’s defense.
As Week 2 unfolds, both teams will monitor quarterback updates closely, but the Panthers appear confident in their game plan, ready to adapt as the Falcons determine their Week 2 starter. The week’s focus for Carolina remains on tightening up their own defense and maintaining discipline against an offense that, until now, has shown varied personnel and playmaking potential at the quarterback position.
