The updated injury news follows a prior development involving rookie wide receiver De’Zhaun Stribling, who was placed on injured reserve earlier in the week with a left ankle deltoid sprain. Stribling is expected to miss at least four games, with surgery still a possibility.
Along with Tonges, Stribling, and Stoll, other notable 49ers players dealing with injuries include wide receiver Ricky Pearsall and defensive tackle Alfred Collins. Pearsall is out for the season due to knee surgery, while Collins was placed on injured reserve before the season following a patellar tendon injury.
Losing Tonges strengthens the need for depth behind tight end George Kittle, who returned from a torn Achilles in Week 1 and caught two passes for 12 yards against the Rams. Tonges had been listed behind Kittle on the preseason depth chart, so his absence adds another adjustment for head coach Kyle Shanahan’s offense.
Hodge’s promotion to the active roster adds an experienced depth option at receiver. The 32-year-old has appeared in 118 career games, recording 67 receptions for 1,026 yards and two touchdowns across stints with the Rams, Browns, Lions, and Falcons. He appeared in four special-teams plays in Week 1.
Stoll provides another veteran tight end option after recording six receptions for 46 yards and a touchdown in 15 games for the New Orleans Saints in 2025. He was waived by Cleveland on August 28 after spending time with New Orleans and will look to contribute with the 49ers.
As the team shifts focus to the Dolphins, San Francisco aims to bounce back from a strong opener and improve its depth as injuries continue to mount. The 49ers host Miami at Levi’s Stadium in Week 2, looking to extend their 1-0 start despite the ongoing roster challenges.
