Missed Opportunity for Kyle Pitts
Early in the game, Pitts lined up in the right slot with veteran cornerback Jalen Ramsey on him. At the snap, Pitts ran about five yards downfield, feigned an out-route to the sideline, then accelerated back up the field. The safety over the top had his eyes elsewhere and didn’t realize Pitts was breaking free.
Pitts was open and was past the coverage. Given his speed and athleticism, a would-be 60-yard sequence seemed well within reach. The issue was the throw. Instead of lofting a deep ball over everyone, the quarterback delivered a low line drive that was also underthrown. Pitts had to adjust, trying to come back to the ball and leap over defenders, but he couldn’t secure it.
Even if Pitts had made that catch, the day would have looked noticeably different—potentially shifting from a goose egg to a productive 30 yards or more. Watching the play, it’s easy to imagine a 60-yard touchdown if the pass had been perfect.
This moment does highlight Pitts’s ability to create separation against an experienced defender, underscoring that there isn’t anything inherently wrong with his overall game.
What’s Next?
Optimism remains high for the Falcons. They’re set to face the Carolina Panthers in Week 2 on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers recently allowed a high-scoring performance, conceding 59 points to the Chicago Bears, which could present a favorable matchup for Atlanta’s offense.
Conversely, the Bears also faced a shutout from a tight end in the same game, suggesting there isn’t a single matchup that guarantees success. Still, a weaker defense should allow the Falcons to move the ball more effectively, especially if Michael Penix Jr. returns to the lineup.
Both teams will look for better days ahead. Pitts is close to breaking out, and a cleaner, more accurate throw could unlock a significant big-play opportunity that fans and coaches alike hope to see more of in the weeks to come.
