The first incident occurred shortly before the two-minute warning in the fourth quarter. Cowboys linebacker Donovan Ezeiruaku grabbed Dart by the facemask and brought the Giants quarterback to the ground. The personal foul moved New York to the Cowboys’ 31-yard line and helped the Giants run clock while protecting their lead.
Under NFL Rule 12, grabbing, twisting, turning, or pulling an opponent’s facemask is a personal foul. The NFL reviews incidents after each game, meaning Ezeiruaku could face additional discipline in the form of fines.
The league’s fines schedule lists a facemask penalty at $11,941 for a first offense and $17,911 for a second offense.
Ezeiruaku has been involved in prior on-field altercations. During a Cowboys joint practice with the New Orleans Saints in training camp, he was involved in a scuffle after throwing a punch at Saints center Erik McCoy. The incident led to a league-wide fine shared by both franchises, and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones indicated that additional internal discipline could be possible for those involved.
Jones emphasized that players must understand the consequences of their actions, saying that consequences should register whether on the field or in everyday life. He also noted that fines to the players involved would be considered in addition to any other disciplinary actions.
Dart, meanwhile, completed 23 of 29 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns in the win. He also absorbed a heavy hit from the Cowboys’ defense earlier in the game, adding to the physical challenge of the afternoon.
Another incident involved Cowboys linebacker DeMarvion Overshown in the first quarter. With 9:38 remaining, Overshown was penalized for unnecessary roughness after making contact with Dart near the sideline. The play came on second-and-10 after Dart stepped out of bounds, and defenders are expected to avoid unnecessary contact after a ball carrier leaves the field. The 15-yard penalty extended a Cowboys drive and could also invite league scrutiny.
Dallas finished the game with nine penalties for 85 yards, a point of frustration for head coach Brian Schottenheimer. After the loss, Schottenheimer acknowledged the challenge of coaching a young roster and adapting to game situations, noting that younger players still have plenty to learn.
Looking ahead, Dallas must address discipline and consistency as the team moves forward, while Ezeiruaku and Overshown await potential league-imposed fines. Dart and the Giants turn their focus to Week 2, with a road matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.
