Reports surfaced that quarterback Tua Tagovailoa might have aggravated a lower back injury during a Thursday practice. The Athletic’s coverage noted that Tagovailoa appeared uncomfortable during individual throwing drills and briefly went to the ground. He had previously missed the opening week of training camp due to back spasms.
Ahead of the season opener, Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski—now in his first year leading the team—announced Tagovailoa as the starter. He also indicated that Michael Penix Jr. would be inactive for Week 1. If Tagovailoa is unable to play because of the back issue, Atlanta would rely on Cooper Rush or Jack Strand behind center. Rush had been designated the backup, with Strand positioned to back him up if necessary.
This situation adds an element of uncertainty for the Falcons heading into Week 1. The Steelers will host Atlanta at Acrisure Stadium as both teams prepare to begin the season with important divisional momentum on the line.
