Patterson’s departure came on the heels of a strong preseason finale, in which the 6-foot-5 receiver contributed in Cleveland’s 37-13 victory over the New England Patriots. He caught both of his targets for 71 yards, including a 52-yard score. Patterson joined the Browns just 10 days earlier after a prior stint with the Jacksonville Jaguars. His collegiate career was spent at Division II Texas Permian Basin, where he posted 32 receptions for 678 yards and five touchdowns in his final college season.
Cleveland’s late-camp roster reshuffle also saw tight ends Drew Biber and Jermaine Terry II cut after both were brought into the fold in the latter stages of camp. Biber had been added on August 20 after the Green Bay Packers waived him, while Terry joined Cleveland on August 17. Terry’s time with the team included a notable moment when a mid-range pass intended for him bounced off his hands for an interception, illustrating the ongoing evaluation at the position.
Stoll, who signed a one-year deal in March, was expected to bring veteran leadership to the room. Over five seasons, he appeared in 76 games with 32 starts, totaling 28 receptions for 239 yards and one touchdown.
Cleveland is also evaluating its wide receiver corps as it moves forward. The organization began clearing space in the pass-catching group a day earlier by waiving Cedric Tillman after claiming Mekhi Blackmon. Tillman had appeared in 38 games with 19 starts across three seasons with the Browns, recording 71 receptions for 833 yards and five touchdowns.
On the depth chart at receiver, the Browns already feature rebuilt talent including Jerry Jeudy as the top target in a revamped room that also features first-round pick KC Concepcion and second-round pick Denzel Boston. Other competitors for spots include Isaiah Bond, Tylan Wallace, and Malachi Corley, with Luke Floriea having made a strong case after scoring two touchdowns in the preseason finale against New England. Floriea’s two early catches went for 14 and 6 yards, underscoring his potential as a contributor.
Cleveland still faces important decisions in the quarterback room, currently holding Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel, and rookie Taylen Green. The organization could preserve all four or choose to stash one of the younger signal-callers on the practice squad.
As the team continues to finalize its initial 53-man roster, any players placed on waivers become fair game for other clubs. Those who clear waivers may be eligible for the Browns’ practice squad, depending on league rules and the players’ contract statuses.
