Less than an hour before the San Diego Padres hosted the Toronto Blue Jays in the series finale, Toronto announced a roster adjustment. The Blue Jays promoted right-hander CJ Van Eyk, adding depth to the pitching staff for the matchup, while Chad Dallas was optioned to Triple-A.
Van Eyk, 27, has yet to make his Major League Baseball debut. A second-round pick by Toronto in the 2020 MLB Draft, he has posted a 3.79 ERA with 56 strikeouts and 25 walks over 78 1/3 innings this season at the Triple-A level.
Dallas has appeared in two MLB games this season for Toronto. In those outings, he allowed one earned run on three hits and two walks over 4 2/3 innings, recording three strikeouts.
This move provides the Blue Jays with additional length and bullpen flexibility as they close out the interleague series with the Padres. Such late roster adjustments are common as teams weigh pitching needs and matchups for important games in a tightly contested season.
