Late burst propels Canonica to the top
Canonica built momentum on the back nine, uncorking a four-birdie run starting at the 12th hole that vaulted him into sole possession of the lead. A bogey at the par-three 17th briefly slowed his momentum, but he ended strong with a closing birdie to sign for an outstanding 64. His scorecard included ten birdies in total.
Canonica credited his patient mindset as a key factor in his success. “I stayed calm all day. If I missed a shot, I just put the next one back in the fairway and onto the green. When I needed to make a bogey, I just made bogey and didn’t try to force anything.” He also noted that the bunkering around Carton House gave him opportunities others couldn’t always capitalize on, allowing him to attack several greens with shorter approaches.
Chasing pack keeps pressure on
Just one shot behind sits Robert Coles after a flawless seven-under-par 65. The 2024 Staysure PGA Seniors Champion kept a bogey-free round with steady accuracy off the tee and reliable iron play. Coles said fairways were the foundation of his round on a course that has challenged him in the past; staying out of trouble allowed him to seize chances as they arose and build a solid score without taking undue risks.
A group of four players is within striking distance on six-under-par after opening rounds of 66. England’s Craig Farrelly, France’s Lionel Alexandre, South Africa’s Keith Horne, and New Zealand’s Mark Brown all sit just behind the leaders. Farrelly described the weather as transforming the course, with the wind shifting and bunkers and lines changing, requiring patience and commitment. Alexandre called it his most complete round of the season so far, highlighting his driving as a key factor and noting his ability to recover when mistakes occurred. He added that he feels comfortable on this style of course.
Carton House delivers another fitting stage
Carton House has quickly established itself as a premier stop on the Staysure Legends Tour, and the venue continues to provide a championship atmosphere with its storied history. Designed by Ryder Cup legend Colin Montgomerie, the course has hosted numerous elite events, including the Irish Open, and remains a stern test with strategic bunkering, demanding tee shots, and fast, tricky greens that test every facet of a player’s game.
As the tournament progresses, Canonica will look to convert his overnight lead into what would be his first Staysure Legends Tour victory. With a field that includes proven winners and major champions in close pursuit, the competition for the 2026 OFX Irish Legends is shaping up to be a compelling battle over the coming days.
