Walker signed a four-year, $72 million deal with Philadelphia in 2022 and was expected to anchor the rotation. However, the right-hander’s performance declined in both the 2023 and 2024 seasons, prompting the Phillies to part ways with him in April. His release opened the door for a new chapter in his career.
Following his exit from Philadelphia, Walker joined the Los Angeles Angels on a minor-league contract in late May. His stint with the Angels, however, was brief. He was released on June 7 after triggering an opt-out clause in his contract. Not deterred, Walker quickly re-signed with the Angels on a new minor-league deal on June 11. The arrangement proved short-lived again, as he was released for the third time on June 20.
Walker received an unconditional release, which leaves his immediate future uncertain. He could pursue opportunities in the affiliated minor leagues, or potentially explore overseas options, as he searches for a fresh start.
This season with Philadelphia, Walker appeared in five games, recording a 1-4 record with a 9.13 ERA, including four starts. In the Angels’ minor-league system this season, he went 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA over five starts. A veteran with 14 years in Major League Baseball, Walker is a former All-Star who has previously contributed at the highest level of the sport.
As Walker moves forward, clubs will assess his track record, durability, and the potential to reclaim a role in a major-league rotation or bullpen. The next chapter in his career remains open, with options that could lead back to the majors, a return to the minors, or opportunities overseas depending on offers and fit.
