heading into the summer, United were reportedly exploring a left-back to challenge Luke Shaw and share workload for the 2026/27 campaign. Hall was among the players considered, but Shaw’s fitness and form across what could be his best season at the club have raised questions about whether a £70m investment in a left-back is the best use of funds.
Recent reporting suggests United aren’t actively pursuing Hall, with a potential internal solution already at the club in the form of Harry Amass.
Harry Amass has emerged as a strong internal contender for the left-back role. After an impressive loan spell, Amass is viewed as ready to contribute at a high level. There has even been speculation that he could stay and compete with Shaw for minutes next season, rather than going out on loan for more first-team action.
The Sun reported that Amass is keen to head out on loan for the 2026/27 season to gain more first-team football, but United may have different plans. The suggestion is that Amass could remain at the club and vie for a starting spot, providing competition for Shaw.
Amass is regarded as being cut from the same cloth as Hall and Shaw. Although he isn’t as polished yet, he has shown rapid development in recent years. Amass first attracted attention during the 2023 pre-season, where he demonstrated the potential to contribute at the highest level. Shaw previously praised Amass’s talent, predicting he would become a star.
All three players share strong technical ability, are adept crossers, and possess well-rounded full-back qualities. Bringing Amass into the fold to learn from Shaw and contribute in cup competitions, as well as in easier league and cup ties, could be a smart path for United. This approach would also avoid spending £70m on Hall, who may not offer a clear upgrade at this stage.
The key next step is giving Amass opportunities in pre-season to prove his case for regular involvement. If he seizes the chance, United could have a reliable homegrown option ready to grow into a top-tier left-back, while preserving budget for other areas of the squad.
