Entering a potential free-agent offseason, Skubal’s situation becomes more complex as the MLB Trade Deadline approaches. Tigers executive leadership will likely weigh whether to pursue a rebuild path or to try to compete with the current core, including a pitcher who has emerged as one of the organization’s top talents.
Following a two-of-three series loss to the Houston Astros on the road, Detroit’s standings reflected a playoff drought likely to extend if conditions don’t improve. In the wake of that set, Skubal spoke candidly about the need for better performance from the team. “The reality is we need to play better baseball or else come the deadline, you give the front office an option to reassess where this team is,” he told The Detroit News. “And if they don’t think what we have is a World Series- or playoff-caliber team, then the whole team is going to look different. That’s just the nature of the beast.”
Skubal stressed that the organization’s future for many players could shift within the next couple of months, emphasizing the urgency of the present. “The future for a lot of people in this room — not just myself — the outlook could look very much different in two months and it all comes to an abrupt end,” he said. “We still control our destiny a little bit. We still do. We play the team this weekend that’s winning our division. It’s another big series. You don’t want to be playing playoff baseball in June, but it feels like we’re playing playoff baseball. We don’t have very much room for error and everyone understands that. Everyone understands there has to be a sense of urgency. There has to be. Not panic. But there has to be a sense of urgency to try to win every game we play.”
Detroit was set to host the Chicago White Sox for a three-game series at Comerica Park, beginning on a Friday evening, as they aimed to stabilize their season and push for better results.
When asked about the trade deadline, Skubal downplayed thoughts of being traded, focusing instead on the present. “I don’t think about it a lot,” he said. “I try not to let that consume me because I need to worry about what I’m doing today. … But there’s also the reality part to it. Everybody, the whole room, needs to focus on winning tonight’s game, winning a series, winning the next series and just let it snowball.”
As the Tigers navigate a tough stretch, Skubal remains a central figure for Detroit’s rotation and a potential pivot point for the franchise’s strategy in the near term. The coming weeks will reveal whether Detroit doubles down on its current core in hopes of a late-season surge, or if the club explores more substantial changes ahead of the trade deadline.
