Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell said the selection was driven by Banks’ talent ceiling, describing him as a potential “top-10-caliber talent” and a possible difference-maker who would add size and youth to a young defensive line.
O’Connell stressed the team’s confidence in Banks’ medical status, noting the collaborative evaluation by Flores and Nielsen and the thorough process from the combine to the 30 visit and formal assessments at Florida. He attributed much of the comfort to the medical team and the surgeons, saying Minnesota’s staff has some of the best in the world.
During his three seasons with Florida, Banks appeared in 27 games, recording 46 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, along with two fumbles recovered and two forced fumbles, according to the college program’s statistics.
Banks fills a major interior defensive-line need for Minnesota after the departures of Javon Hargrave and Jonathan Allen, giving the Vikings depth behind Jalen Redmond. O’Connell added that Banks loves football, wants to be coached hard, and sees Minnesota as a place to maximize his talents now and over the course of his career.
