Kadyn Proctor, a former Alabama Crimson Tide offensive tackle, was Miami’s selection at No. 12, as the Dolphins opted to add an extra layer of protection for their quarterback while passing on other top prospects.
Dolphins general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan explained the decision, saying Downs and Bain are marvelous players but that Proctor’s rare profile stood out. He highlighted Proctor’s size, athletic ability, and production as factors that made him an outlier worth building around.
Sullivan also stressed that the pick was partly about protecting Malik Willis, emphasizing the need to give the new quarterback time and health to perform. He noted that the organization invested in Willis and believes Proctor can help stabilize the line for years to come.
With Day 2 looming, Miami’s plan centers on adding weapons for Willis. Head coach Jeff Hafley indicated the team intends to bolster the wide receiver group and that Miami has ample draft capital—seven picks in the first 100 selections—to find targets to complement Willis.
In sum, the Dolphins sacrificed immediate access to Downs and Bain in favor of upgrading the offensive line through Proctor and amassing additional draft capital, while signaling a clear intent to prioritize receivers on Day 2 to support their quarterback.
