Following the signing of left tackle Trent Williams, San Francisco can turn its attention to guard and edge rusher, areas that proved vulnerable last season. The strategic goal is to upgrade the pass rush and create more disruption for opposing quarterbacks.
According to 49ers insider Matt Maiocco, Lawrence fits the scheme because of his quickness off the snap and his ability to rush from the edge in passing situations. His profile aligns with Kris Kocurek’s emphasis on getting pressure on the quarterback from the defensive line.
Lawrence is a 6-foot-5, 250-pound edge rusher who spent four years at UCF and finished with 20 career sacks. His physical style and size are viewed as assets that could help stabilize San Francisco’s defensive line and provide a steady complement to Nick Bosa on obvious passing downs.
Compared with last year’s first-round pick Mykel Williams, Lawrence is seen as a more prolific pass rusher. Williams was strong against the run but ended his college career with 14 sacks, and he managed only one NFL sack in his rookie season before a knee injury shortened his year.
GM John Lynch has long said a productive pass rush is the great equalizer in today’s NFL, and the 49ers are prioritizing edge options to address last season’s shortcomings. Landing Lawrence at No. 27 would be a significant step toward transforming a playoff contender into a true Super Bowl threat.
