Gibson’s season was cut short by a knee injury in October, paving the way for Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson to form a two-man backfield that still produced in his absence. In five games this season, Gibson logged 25 rushing attempts for 106 yards and a rushing touchdown, while also contributing as a receiver.
Gibson’s 2024 numbers were more productive, with 120 rushing attempts for 538 yards and a touchdown, along with 23 receptions for 260 yards. One of his standout moments came in the form of a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against the Dolphins, earning Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
The veteran running back joined the Patriots in 2024 via free agency after four seasons with Washington, where he posted 642 carries for 2,643 yards and 21 rushing touchdowns, plus 172 receptions for 1,283 yards and seven touchdowns as a receiver.
With Gibson’s departure, New England now fields a developing group behind Stevenson and Henderson, including Terrell Jennings and Lan Larison, both 24 years old. Jennings joined as a rookie free agent after the 2025 draft and began on the offseason roster, while Larison was a sixth-round pick. The Patriots may consider adding a veteran depth piece, or rely on the younger backs to grow into complementary roles.
Gibson’s loss leaves a potential void in kickoff return and pass-catching production, areas where he contributed significantly for the Patriots, including 1,407 kickoff return yards on 56 returns and a memorable long kickoff return that shifted momentum in a key game.
As the team assesses its backfield needs, the emphasis will be on developing depth and evaluating opportunities for a third veteran back, while Stevenson and Henderson carry the load in the near term. The Patriots’ approach will likely balance continued contribution from their proven backs with opportunities for younger players to rise.
