The project, which explores Western Pennsylvania’s rich football heritage, will run exclusively for two months at the Kamin Science Center’s Rangos Giant Cinema, beginning February 28. The documentary features Steelers legends Bill Cowher, Jerome Bettis, Joey Porter Sr., and James Harrison, weaving their stories into the region’s cultural fabric.
Officials view the release as a strategic step ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft, which Pittsburgh will host April 23–25. Jerad Bachar, president and CEO of VisitPITTSBURGH, described The Football Town as setting the tone for events surrounding the draft, highlighting Western Pennsylvania’s football legacy.
Separately, McAfee is navigating rights challenges related to a potential Super Bowl LXI broadcast concept from Disney and ESPN. The proposed Field Pass would bring McAfee’s on-site energy to Super Bowl coverage, but securing NFL rights remains a notable hurdle.
McAfee has expressed optimism about overcoming the rights obstacles, tweeting that the hurdles are “hurdle-able.” If approved, his involvement could add a distinctive dimension to alternative broadcasts alongside traditional and ManningCast options.
The documentary collaboration with NFL Films marks a first-time immersive format for the organization, with McAfee’s hometown connection positioning him as a central voice for the project. Tickets for The Football Town are currently on sale for the February 28 premiere and subsequent run.
Industry observers will watch how this dual track—local documentary storytelling and potential flagship broadcast rights—shapes McAfee’s role in spotlighting Pittsburgh’s football heritage and impacting future media arrangements for major events.
