Petzing, the former Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator for three seasons, arrives as a relatively unfamiliar name to Lions fans but with a background that the organization hopes will bolster its offense through a diverse, detail-oriented approach.
In a video sent to Lions season-ticket holders, Petzing gave fans a glimpse into his personal life, noting time with his wife and two kids and sharing hobbies such as snowboarding, golf, good food, staying active, and community involvement.
Petzing explained why he believes he was hired by Detroit, pointing to his confidence, varied experience on the offensive side of the ball, and his ability to oversee an entire unit while holding players and coaches accountable. He stressed his familiarity with blocking details and quarterback progression as part of his decision-making process.
He also spoke about his interview performance, saying he felt he hit the right notes and that his three years calling plays helped him understand why teams do certain things and how to maximize players’ talents. He is optimistic about improving with each game and each season.
Petzing’s background includes three seasons as Cardinals OC, a playing career at Middlebury College where he was a defensive back before injuries cut it short, and coaching stops with the Browns (intern in 2013; tight ends coach from 2020–2023) and the Vikings (offensive assistant, assistant wide receivers coach, and assistant quarterbacks coach).
The report originates from Heavy Sports, and the Lions’ decision to install Petzing signals a strategic shift in Campbell’s staff as Detroit looks to refresh its offensive approach.
