Downs, who spent two seasons at Ohio State after a year at Alabama, emerged as a versatile safety with top-10 potential. Last season he tallied 68 tackles, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles. Wilson believes Downs could end up the best defensive player in the draft and would be a Day 1 starter for the Browns.
The 2026 draft landscape already has Downs among the top prospects. ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. ranks him sixth overall, while The Athletic slots him as the fourth-ranked prospect. NFL.com’s Dan Parr even imagines Cleveland selecting Downs at six, arguing the Browns could reinforce their defense instead of addressing OL or WR in that spot.
Cleveland’s safety room currently features Ronnie Hickman and Grant Delpit. Hickman, 24, is a pending restricted free agent who joined the team as an undrafted player, and Downs would be a substantial upgrade. Hickman posted 103 tackles with two interceptions last season, while Delpit had 89 tackles and one interception as he enters the final year of his contract.
Cleveland has long-prided itself on its defense, with Myles Garrett anchoring the pass rush. General Manager Andrew Berry has stressed the defense’s youth and overall completeness across levels, a factor that could make Downs an attractive pick at six if he’s available. Even with offensive needs, the Browns could pivot to a defensive pillar if Downs presents the best long-term value.
