NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that McCoy will serve as assistant head coach under Kubiak. He spent last season with the Titans, starting as a senior offensive assistant before taking over as interim head coach in October after Tennessee fired Brian Callahan; the team went 2-9 over the final 11 games.
McCoy brings a long NFL résumé, including four seasons as the Chargers’ head coach from 2013 through 2016. He went 27-37 and led a playoff appearance in 2013, defeating a Wild Card opponent before a Divisional Round exit. The offensive-minded coach previously served as Broncos offensive coordinator (2009-2012) and helped transition the offense around Tim Tebow in 2011 and later worked with Peyton Manning in 2012.
His coaching trajectory also includes stints as Broncos OC in 2017, Cardinals OC in 2018, and Jaguars quarterbacks coach from 2022 to 2024. Across 23 NFL seasons, McCoy has worked with prominent teams and players, including Manning and Rivers as Comeback Player of the Year recipients, and Joey Bosa as AP Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2016.
McCoy’s coaching tree links him to established figures such as George Seifert, John Fox, and Josh McDaniels, with three of his former assistants—Frank Reich, Nick Sirianni, and Shane Steichen—going on to become NFL head coaches.
For the Raiders, the hire provides a veteran, leadership-focused fit for a franchise reshaping its locker room and staff around a first-time head coach. McCoy’s background as both a head coach and a longtime offensive strategist is viewed as a stabilizing addition to guide Kubiak and the team through the 2026 season.
