McCoy, 53, brings extensive coaching experience, including four seasons as Chargers head coach and a stint as Tennessee Titans interim head coach last season after Brian Callahan’s departure. He began the year with the Titans as a senior offensive assistant before taking over on an interim basis and finishing the campaign 2-9.
Raiders fans will be familiar with McCoy’s background, given his four-year tenure as Chargers head coach, where he went 27-37. There’s also a potential personal connection: McCoy played quarterback for the Broncos in 1995 when Gary Kubiak (Klint Kubiak’s father) was the Broncos’ quarterbacks coach, suggesting they may have longstanding ties.
Raiders general manager John Spytek described the coaching search as lengthy but ultimately worthwhile. He said the team needed to be patient while Kubiak finished his Super Bowl run, noting, “We had to be patient… we’re super proud of him for accomplishing that, and he stood out with his leadership, with his humility, with his work ethic, with his intelligence.”
Spytek also emphasized that the Raiders prioritized the person over the scheme in their head-coaching choice. “There’s a lot of great things ahead,” Spytek said, adding that Kubiak’s daily communication with players and character traits—humility, work ethic, and leadership—were pivotal, not just Xs and Os.
While Kubiak is recognized as a skilled play designer and caller, Las Vegas intends to assemble a staff that complements his temperament and culture. McCoy’s head-coaching experience provides a valuable perspective as Kubiak navigates his first year in charge and continues to pursue offensive and defensive coordinators.
With McCoy aboard, the Raiders will continue to assemble their initial coaching staff ahead of the upcoming season, signaling a strategic emphasis on leadership and cohesion alongside scheme as they finalize their coordinator plans.
