McCoy led the Chargers from 2013-2016, finishing with a 27-37 record. He spent the 2025 season with the Tennessee Titans, starting as a senior offensive assistant and then serving as interim head coach after Brian Callahan was fired in Week 7, going 2-9 in that role as the Titans finished 31st in total offense.
This move marks McCoy’s third stop in the AFC West. Before his Chargers tenure, he was the Broncos’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2009-2012, then returned to Denver as OC in 2017 after leaving Los Angeles.
The Raiders have also made a high-profile staff addition, hiring Klint Kubiak as head coach. McCoy’s presence provides veteran experience for Kubiak’s staff as the team eyes a competitive path in a tough division.
In Los Angeles, the Chargers have been through a coaching carousel in recent years, with Brandon Staley and Anthony Lynn preceding McCoy’s era. Injuries, particularly along the offensive line, hampered the team last season, and the Chargers are counting on a refreshed offensive fit with new pieces, including Mike McDaniel as offensive coordinator and Adam Gase as a passing-game specialist.
Competition in the AFC West remains stout. After a surprising 2025, the Chiefs slipped to 6-11, the Broncos won the division at 14-3, and the Chargers posted 11-6 before another early playoff exit. If the Chargers stay healthy and execute a sharper system, they’ll be among the teams to watch in 2026, even as the Raiders’ revamped staff adds another layer of intrigue to the division.
