Gutierrez’ path to the NFL began as a rookie free agent with the Denver Broncos. Since entering the league, he has spent time with the Las Vegas Raiders, Kansas City Chiefs, San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns, and Indianapolis Colts. He appeared in one game for the Raiders in 2022 and one for the 49ers in 2024, and he previously joined the Patriots’ practice squad in 2022 and again in 2025.
Mitchell, a former 49ers draftee in 2021, has produced at the professional level with 327 carries for 1,523 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns over three seasons in San Francisco. He also spent time on the Patriots’ practice squad in 2025, and his familiarity with the organization could help in developing depth at running back.
New England’s running back room produced solid numbers this season, anchored by a two-headed attack of veteran Rhamondre Stevenson and rookie TreVeyon Henderson. Stevenson totaled 130 carries for 603 yards and seven rushing touchdowns, while Henderson logged 180 carries for 911 rushing yards and nine touchdowns. Both backs contributed in the passing game, with Stevenson posting 32 receptions for 345 yards and two touchdowns and Henderson adding 35 receptions for 221 yards and one touchdown.
On the offensive line, the Patriots leaned on young players alongside veteran leadership. Will Campbell, the team’s fourth overall pick, started 13 games before injuries limited his season. Morgan Moses provided steady experience, appearing in 17 games with just one sack allowed and eight penalties, helping the line find its footing as the team built its identity.
The moves to add Gutierrez and Mitchell come as the Patriots continue shaping their roster for the 2026 season. With a challenging schedule ahead, veteran depth and practice-squad-ready players could be valuable for offseason workouts, roster competition, and development as the team seeks to sustain growth in an evolving offense.
