King’s Raiders tenure included a 2016 Second-Team All-Pro nod and leading the NFL in punt yards in 2014. After departing Las Vegas, he spent a season with the Denver Broncos in 2018 and later appearances in the XFL/UFL before deciding to retire.
Beyond football, King has pursued music, drawing more than 4,000 monthly listeners on Spotify as of February 10, with Sweat Tea approaching one million streams.
In a message posted to X, King described retiring on his own terms, thanking the Raiders, the XFL, and the UFL, and noting that he had explored a return but would shut the door if “gatekeepers” blocked him from reentering the league.
Meanwhile, a separate NFL development could see a former Raiders quarterback back with the organization in a coaching role. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that Derek Carr could unretire “for the right situation and coaching staff,” with a potential fit as a quarterbacks coach under Klint Kubiak’s system.
Carr has spoken about Kubiak’s scheme and standards, suggesting that a return would hinge on aligning with the offensive culture and coaching staff. No official coaching hires have been announced, but Carr’s comments add an intriguing layer to the Raiders’ plans as they consider the future of their quarterback room.
